DATE: Antique, c.1900 

This fantastic antique natural amber bead necklace dates to circa 1900. Each amber bead is graduated in size, displaying a gorgeous and rare butterscotch/egg yolk colour. They're hung on a string thread and it has a wearable length of 29 inches. 

Amber has a diverse and rich cultural history, and ancient cultures all over the world have applied symbolic meanings to the gemstone. My favourite, between 800 and 1,000 AD, Scandinavian Vikings would carve pieces of amber into various animal shapes. Each carved piece was meant to contain the individual strengths of that animal species. They'd attach the carved amber to their armour to keep them strong and safe.
