A Santo Domingo mosaic inlay clamshell pendant on a strand of red shell bead necklace. Squares of tranquil blue turquoise, onyx, shell and mother of pearl encrust the clamshell. The top of the shell is drilled through and strung on a necklace of tab-style shell beads. The piece is finished with shell heishi beads and the hook and eye clasp often seen in the necklaces of this type. A marvelous marriage of natural beauty and exquisite craftsmanship. Circa 1980.

This wonderful style of inlaid shell originates with the Kewa Pueblo, previously known as the Pueblo of Santo Domingo, people of New Mexico. Heishi (meaning "shell") beads are small disc or tube-shaped beads made of shells or stones, traditionally cut, polished and drilled by hand.
