DATE: Victorian, c.1880

Charming antique oval locket with ivy leaf motif borders around a central (flaming?) heart. It's double fronted, with the two hearts engraved with "My Mother" and "My Father". The Victorians created a secret "language of flowers" whereby different flowers and plants were infused with symbolic meaning. Ivy, in this instance, signified "I cling to thee" - affection, friendship, fidelity - particularly poignant given the dual parental dedication. It's crafted in 15 karat gold and opens to reveal two locket compartments complete with original glass and fittings. Such a sweet memento.
